Game Log 2: Play
Presentation
We had to pitch our concept (including a paper prototype) within 3 minutes to the Expert council. We have taken pictures of our brainstorming sessions prior (as done so on a whiteboard) and the paper prototype we presented itself. See below:
Our concept
Before reflecting on the received feedback, we thought it would seem useful to give a rundown of our concept. You play as a cat in a boat and your goal is to fish up as much trash as possible. You start in the middle of the board on an island and then traverse through these rings of ocean. Along the way you will stumble across pieces of plastic waste, which you can only pick up if you land on a tile with plastic at the end of your turn. You will also come across currents that sweep you up and reverse the board, as well as Event cards that spice up the game and makes things harder (or easier). In order to move forward, you will need paddles. You will consume these upon use as you move past each tile.
Feedback from the Expert Council
The experts have given us a lot of useful feedback. For instance, one expert said our game felt too ''nice'', and suggested we throw in the possibility of being an evildoer, like a player that actually throws out trash into the sea. Another suggested we include a recycling bin where players can drop off their plastic waste in order to obtain nice boosts that can help them gain an advantage. We will definitely keep all of this in mind during our next iteration.
Games for culture
The game could create mindfulness in a playful way. It could help young people think about the consequences of the way we people treat the earth we live on. An European value we'd like to challenge is the Rule of Law. Efforts to minimize pollution and other climate change issues are mostly made by the everyday person when big corporations are the ones with much more output of said waste.
